over the steepest ridge, under saint mary’s bridge, the river runs deepest, bustling with bitterness, i reach in my pocket & pull out a locket, the shape of a golden heart, promise we’ll never part, take my coat & keep it on your shoulders, make for the cave in case it gets colder, sleep in the boat & wait till the morning breaks, under the marble ledge there at the river’s edge, the banks are like pavement, sloping with sediment, winding up good & wedged, down the past the cottages, hedges round gardens with mockingbird guardians, staying afloat, braver & bolder, making some waves before we get older, leak in the boat, mend it another day...when the night gives way & light sneaks in the cave, sparrows start to sing & bells begin to ring, then we row downstream, tie around a willow tree, basket full of biscuits, burgundy & cheese, you’ve got lips like cherries, ruby beads of berries, we shall soon be married, we shall be so merry
